Their way or the highway
I took the kids ice-skating today at Pegula Ice Arena. I also took them the day before yesterday. It irritates me to no end that the only direction people are willing to skate is counterclockwise. What is wrong with going the other way, too? After all, real ice-skaters have to skate both ways, not just one way. I’ve been able to get people to go the other way a couple times over the years by being the first one on ice, but it is so hard to go against the grain in anything. When you work out, you do repetitions with both arms and both legs, not just one side. To go only one way in the skating rink will develop only one side of your brain. In the same vein, why do people in spelling bees have to spell all the words straight from their heads without the aid of paper and pencil? I can’t spell off the top of my head. I spell better when I can write the words down. Why do spelling bees favor only the people who are good at that one specific way? There is more than one way to learn an...
